The office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR) has deleted a post on X that had carried a map of India showing the entire region of Jammu and Kashmir, including Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, as well as Aksai Chin as part of Indian territory.

The post had been shared on February 7, soon after New Delhi and Washington had announced details of a bilateral interim framework agreement on trade.

Alongside information about the deal, the USTR uploaded the map, which quickly attracted attention on social media.

The map portrayed the entire region of Jammu and Kashmir, including PoK, as Indian territory. It also showed Aksai Chin, claimed by China, within India’s borders.

On previous occasions, official maps circulated by US authorities had carried demarcation lines to indicate PoK and Aksai Chin as disputed areas.

In contrast, the version posted by the USTR did not feature such markings and instead depicted the whole region as an integral part of India.

However, the specific post carrying the map has now been removed from the USTR’s X handle, despite India consistently maintaining that the entire Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir “has been, is and will always be an integral and inalienable part of India".

New Delhi also maintains that Aksai Chin is an integral part of Indian territory.

In the past, China’s “standard map" had staked claims over Arunachal Pradesh, Aksai Chin, Taiwan and the disputed South China Sea.

India and the United States announced that they had reached a framework for the first phase of a bilateral trade agreement under which both countries would reduce import duties on a range of goods to boost two-way trade.

According to a joint statement, Washington will reduce tariffs on Indian goods to 18 per cent.

The US has removed an additional punitive duty of 25 per cent on Indian products, while reciprocal tariffs of the same level are expected to be cut to 18 per cent soon.
