US President Donald Trump has slammed Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey over his statement on not allowing enforcement of federal immigration laws in the northern city.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump said: “Surprisingly, Mayor Jacob Frey just stated that, ‘Minneapolis does not, and will not, enforce Federal Immigration Laws.’ This is after having had a very good conversation with him. Could somebody in his inner sanctum please explain that this statement is a very serious violation of the Law, and that he is PLAYING WITH FIRE!"

This comes after Mayor Jacob Frey said he has spoken with border czar Tom Homan and told him that the city will not enforce federal immigration laws.

“I shared with Mr. Homan the serious negative impacts this operation has had on Minneapolis and surrounding communities, as well as the strain it has placed on our local police officers," Frey wrote in a post on the social media platform X.

“I also made it clear that Minneapolis does not and will not enforce federal immigration laws, and that we will remain focused on keeping our neighbors and streets safe. City leaders will continue to stay in conversation with Mr. Homan and his team," he further said.

While emphasising that he is working towards ending the Operation Metro Surge “quickly as possible," Frey said: “Public safety works best when it’s built on community trust, not tactics that create fear or division."

Besides, Governor Tim Walz also met with the border czar for a “productive" conversation earlier in the day after two citizens were killed by immigration authorities in Minneapolis.

Alex Pretti, a 37-year-old nurse, was shot and killed by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents over the weekend. The incident marked the second fatal shooting involving federal officers in the state in less than a month, following the death of mother-of-three Renée Good.

According to The Hill, Trump administration officials, including Homan and Attorney General Pam Bondi, have urged local officials to comply with requests from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to help detain migrants without legal status in the area.

Earlier on Tuesday, a man was arrested after charging toward Democratic US Representative Ilhan Omar and spraying an unknown, foul-smelling liquid on her during a town hall meeting in Minneapolis, an incident that unfolded as she was sharply criticising federal immigration authorities and drew swift condemnation from political leaders across party lines.

A video from the event showed a man rushing toward Omar as she stood at the lectern and spraying a stream of liquid at her before being tackled by another attendee.

Later, Mayor Frey said in a post on X: “Unacceptable. Violence and intimidation have no place in Minneapolis. We can disagree without putting people at risk. I’m relieved Rep. Illhan Omar is okay and appreciate MPD for responding quickly. This kind of behavior will not be tolerated in our city."
