A high-altitude research aircraft belonging to NASA safely landed at Ellington Airport in Houston on Tuesday after suffering a serious technical failure during its return flight.
The WB-57 Canberra jet experienced a malfunction in its landing gear, which failed to deploy correctly. The aircraft was returning from a routine mission when the problem occurred, creating a tense situation for the crew.
Despite the danger, the pilots carried out a highly controlled landing under intense pressure. The heavy jet was brought to a complete stop without any injuries.
Ground crews and emergency services were placed on high alert as the aircraft approached the runway. Eyewitnesses said the jet descended steadily, even with the clear technical difficulty.

The aircraft remains on the runway as teams assess the situation and plan recovery and repair work.
The WB-57 Canberra is known for its long wings and its ability to fly above 60,000 feet, close to the edge of space. NASA uses the aircraft for atmospheric research and to test equipment meant for space missions.
Losing the jet would have been a major setback for scientific research. Initial assessments suggest structural damage is limited, and the main concern remains the safety of those on board.
Investigation to follow
An investigation will now begin to determine the cause of the landing gear failure. Data from the flight will also be analysed to ensure full safety for future missions.
For now, attention remains on the skill and bravery of the pilots, whose actions turned a potential disaster into a success for aviation safety.
