India EU Free Trade Deal Live Updates: India and the European Union are expected to move closer today to finalising a landmark free-trade agreement, a step that could significantly reshape one of the world’s largest economic partnerships. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is hosting European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President Antonio Costa for the talks. Momentum has built in recent weeks, with von der Leyen last week describing the proposed pact as a “historic trade agreement” that could create a market of nearly two billion people, accounting for almost a quarter of global GDP.
Negotiations on the free-trade agreement were first launched in 2007, suspended in 2013 due to differences in ambition and revived in 2022. If concluded, the deal would mark a decisive shift in India-EU ties, which have gained pace as Europe seeks to reduce dependence on the US and China and India positions itself as a key economic and strategic partner.
