US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor hosted a reception at his residence in New Delhi, welcoming friends from India, members of the diplomatic community, business leaders and US partners. Union Ministers S Jaishankar and Piyush Goyal were among those present, along with more than 75 ambassadors.
In a post on X, Gor wrote that amid renewed trade ties and deepening strategic relations, “the real magic happens in these personal moments—where trust, ideas, and shared futures spark."
India-US partnership
Speaking at the event, Gor praised the growing partnership between India and the United States. He said the Trump administration was paying close attention to India and credited the friendship between President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi for helping conclude the framework of the interim trade agreement.
“I’ve been here just a little over a month, and we hit the ground running. The White House is paying attention to India. Our President is paying attention to India," he said.
India-US interim trade framework
The United States and India recently announced a framework for an Interim Agreement on reciprocal, mutually beneficial trade. The move reaffirmed their commitment to a broader Bilateral Trade Agreement launched by the two leaders on February 13, 2025.
Under the framework, India agreed to eliminate or reduce tariffs on US industrial goods and several agricultural and food products. These include dried distillers’ grains, red sorghum, tree nuts, fruit, soybean oil, wine and spirits.
The US will impose an 18 per cent reciprocal tariff on goods from India, including textiles, leather products, plastics, organic chemicals, home decor, artisanal goods and certain machinery. Later, the US may remove tariffs on select items such as generic medicines, gems and aircraft parts.
Gor presented his credentials to President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan on January 14, becoming the 27th United States Ambassador to India.
