A 13-year-old boy has been arrested after allegedly stabbing two pupils at Kingsbury High School in Brent, north-west London, UK on Tuesday afternoon. According to witnesses quoted by the Daily Mail, the suspect allegedly shouted “Allahu Akbar", meaning “God is greatest" in Arabic, during the attack.
The victims, aged 12 and 13, were taken to hospital and are in a serious condition after suffering stab wounds to the neck.
One was admitted to a major trauma centre as a priority. Police said both boys were believed to be in a serious condition.
What eyewitnesses said?
The 13-year-old boy was arrested on suspicion of two counts of attempted murder after fleeing the scene. Officers later located the suspect and recovered a weapon believed to have been used in the attack.
It is understood the incident unfolded entirely within the school’s Bacon Lane campus, reportedly inside a science classroom.
Counter-terror officers are examining these unconfirmed reports as part of their investigation.
One parent, Simon Theodoru, whose daughter is in 8, said he had been told a former pupil returned to the school and targeted one student. Another pupil was stabbed while attempting to trigger the fire alarm to alert others.
A father of another pupil said children who were in the class were being kept at the school as potential witnesses.
Kingsbury High School is an academy school serving children aged 11 to 18, with both upper and lower sites.
Counter-terror police lead investigation
The Metropolitan Police said counter-terrorism officers are leading the investigation due to the surrounding circumstances. However, the incident has not yet been declared a terrorist incident.
Detective Chief Superintendent Luke Williams said, “Due to the surrounding circumstances, the investigation is now being led by officers from Counter Terrorism Policing London. This has not currently been declared a terrorist incident."
Police said they arrived at the scene within 13 minutes of the emergency calls.
Reactions
Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood said her thoughts and prayers were with the two pupils and their families. She thanked police for their rapid response and said they should be given space to continue their investigation.
Mayor of London Sir Sadiq Khan said his thoughts were with the families and urged anyone with information to contact police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously.
Muhammed Butt, leader of Brent Council, described the incident as “deeply shocking and distressing", adding that no parent should fear for their child’s safety at school.
