WhatsApp is now offering real-time chat translations for Android and iOS users which is gradually making its way to all WhatsApp mobile users in the next few days.

WhatsApp has generally advocated for translations. But real-time changes have been hard to come by which is why the new official update from the platform could help millions use the messaging app in a better way and across features. WhatsApp is no longer just a chat app and with Meta AI it has some wide array of features.

WhatsApp Real-Time Message Translation

WhatsApp says the new feature works for personal chats, group messages and even channel updates. For the early phase, WhatsApp real-time translation will work for English, Spanish, Hindi, Russian and Portuguese among others. However, for iPhone users there are 19 languages supported for the feature.

So, how does the new real-time feature work? WhatsApp says users have to long-press on a message to see the Translate option on the screen. You will get the option to translate in different languages for which WhatsApp will ask to download the language pack to help you translate a message you have received.

We haven’t seen the new translation option work on our WhatsApp accounts yet so the rollout could be coming in phases across markets.

The messaging app offers Android users the chance to get real-time translations automatically without having to manually enable the feature from the settings. And yes, WhatsApp assures that like all its features the chats are processed on-device so the platform also cannot read the content of the messages, even the translated ones.

WhatsApp is also testing a new way for the ‘disappearing chats’ feature to work for much less than 24 hours. This is a privacy feature that ensures that important texts are sent, seen and then removed from the app that even WhatsApp cannot retrieve.

The existing timeline for chats to disappear on WhatsApp are 24 hours, 7 days (one week) or 90 days. Once the timer is set for either of these options, your chats will go away for good. But the messaging app wants to make the tool even more effective by letting them disappear in one hour or even 12 hours if needed in some cases.
