Two Primary Suspects In Osman Hadi's Murder Fled To India Via Meghalaya, Say Bangladesh Police

The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) said the suspects in Osman Hadi's murder fled to India via the Haluaghat border with the help of local associates.

The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) in Bangladesh have claimed that two primary suspects in the murder of Sharif Osman Hadi, which sparked widespread protests in the country, fled to India via the Haluaghat border in Mymensingh district that is connected to Meghalaya.

Addressing a press conference, DMP Additional Commissioner SN Nazrul Islam said the suspects, Faisal Karim Masud and Alamgir Sheikh, crossed into the Indian state of Meghalaya with the help of local associates, reported The Daily Star.

“According to our information, the suspects entered India via the Haluaghat border. After crossing, they were initially received by an individual named Purti. Later, a taxi driver named Sami transported them to Tura city in Meghalaya," Nazrul Islam said.

Bangladesh Govt Working With India

The DMP official said the police have received reports suggesting that the two individuals who assisted the suspects, Purti and Sami, have since been detained by authorities in India. He said the Bangladesh government is actively working with India to bring back the suspects.

“We are maintaining communication with Indian authorities through both formal and informal channels to ensure their arrest and extradition," he said.

Osman Hadi’s Murder

Osman Hadi, a prominent political figure and a fierce critic of India and the Awami League, was one of the leading figures in the July 2024 uprising that led to the fall of the Sheikh Hasina-led Awami League government last year.

After the uprising, Hadi formed the Inquilab Mancha platform and was preparing to contest the parliamentary elections in February. On December 12, he was shot in the head by masked gunmen and flown to Singapore for treatment, where he succumbed to his injuries.

His death sparked widespread protests across Bangladesh, as hundreds of thousands of supporters vandalised media houses like Prothom Alo and The Daily Star and targeted the Indian diplomatic offices.

The violence spread to Mymensingh, where a Hindu youth was lynched and his body was set on fire, leading to widespread criticism. The incident further strained ties between India and Bangladesh. Allegations of Hadi’s killers fleeing to India also escalated tensions.
