Security cameras recorded a massive sinkhole opening in Shanghai, China, swallowing a large section of a busy roadway. The footage shows the road caving in, devouring nearby structures and creating a gaping void.
Shanghai faces persistent subsidence risks due to soft alluvial soils, excessive groundwater extraction, thin sand layers, and voids from urban construction. These factors often trigger collapses, ranging from small potholes to large sinkholes like this incident.
Previous incidents
In January 2024, a road in Minhang District sank about 10 metres following a sewage pipe failure, though no casualties were reported. Data from 2017‑2023 shows that 72% of Chinese sinkholes are linked to human activity, including poor infrastructure and construction faults.
The video once again highlights the ongoing concerns about urban planning and infrastructure safety in rapidly growing cities like Shanghai.
