Bangladesh voted on Thursday in a crucial election held after the fall of Sheikh Hasina’s government. Vote counting begins.

After the voting in Bangladesh ended, Chief Advisor of the Interim Government Prof. Muhammad Yunus urged political parties and candidates to remain united during “difference of opinion".
Bangladesh went to the polls today in a historic election, with the legacy Awami League- Sheikh Hasina’s party- absent from the ballot for the first time in three decades.
After the voting ended, Prof. Yunus issued a statement congratulating and expressing gratitude to the nation for the referendum held on the 13th Parliament Election and the implementation of July Certificate.

“‘I express special thanks to the Election Commission, Law and order forces, Armed Forces, Administration, observation parties, media workers and all officers involved in voting. This huge democratic arrangement has been successfully completed due to their dedication and hard work," he said.
“I appeal to political parties and candidates—to democratic modesty, tolerance and mutual respect remains unbroken even after final result was announced. There will be a difference of opinion, but we must remain united in national interest," he further said.

Yunus voted at the Gulshan Model High School and College polling centre in Dhaka and described the day as a turning point for the nation.
Speaking to reporters after voting, Yunus said, “From today, we have the opportunity to create a new Bangladesh at every level. Let us celebrate this day as a birthday throughout the day. Let everyone celebrate and make sure to cast their vote. Voting for candidates is important. But the referendum is very important. I urge everyone to take part in the referendum so that we can build a new Bangladesh. Today is a day of joy for all of Bangladesh. A day of liberation. The end of our nightmare and the beginning of a new dream. Congratulations to everyone. Eid Mubarak."
The Bangladesh Election Commission reported a 32.88 percent voter turnout by noon today at 32,789 polling centres, covering roughly 77 percent of the total polling stations, reflecting moderate participation midway through the day.
