Pakistan’s former prime minister Imran Khan, who is currently held in Rawalpindi’s Adiala Jail, has launched one of his strongest attacks yet on Army Chief Field Marshal Asim Munir, alleging that his policies are “disastrous” for the country and accusing him of deliberately “igniting tensions” with Afghanistan.

In a detailed post on X, shared in Urdu and cited by his party and family members, the 73-year-old PTI founder said Munir had worsened Pakistan’s security climate and was pursuing actions aimed at bolstering his international profile.

His remarks came a day after his sister, Dr Uzma Khan, was allowed to meet him after more than a month following special permission from the Shehbaz Sharif-led government.

Khan wrote: “Asim Munir's policies are disastrous for Pakistan. Because of his policies, terrorism has spiralled out of control that grieves me deeply.”

He further alleged: “Asim Munir has no concern for Pakistan's national interests. He is doing all this merely to please Western powers. He deliberately ignited tensions with Afghanistan so that he could be seen internationally as a so-called 'mujahid' (Islamic fighter).”

According to Khan, the military’s approach of drone strikes and internal operations has worsened the security landscape. “Munir first threatened Afghans, then expelled refugees from Pakistan and carried out drone strikes whose consequences we now face in the form of rising terrorism,” he claimed.

Khan also intensified his criticism with personal accusations, calling Munir a “mentally unstable man” whose “moral bankruptcy has led to the complete collapse of the Constitution and rule of law in Pakistan.”

He alleged that he and his wife were imprisoned in “fabricated cases” and subjected to “the worst form of psychological torture.” Detailing his confinement, Khan stated:
“I have been kept in complete solitary confinement, locked inside a cell with no contact with a single human being for four weeks Even the basic necessities guaranteed under the jail manual have been taken away from us.”

Khan further claimed that despite court directives, his access to political colleagues, lawyers, and even family members had been blocked. He said his sister Noreen Niazi was “dragged on the road” while attempting to meet him.

He also praised Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi for choosing “resistance over compromise” amid what he described as escalating state repression. Taking aim at federal authorities, Khan wrote: “Those threatening Governor's rule in KP should impose it today rather than tomorrow and then watch what happens to them.”

Khan has been imprisoned since August 2023 in multiple cases.

The extended restrictions on meetings had raised concerns about his wellbeing, though his sister Uzma said he was “perfectly fine” physically but experiencing “mental torture” due to solitary confinement.
