Russian President Vladimir Putin will arrive in the capital at around 6.30 pm on Thursday for a tightly scheduled 27-hour official visit. Upon landing, he will go directly to the Prime Minister’s residence for a one-to-one dinner meeting, which is expected to conclude around 8.30 pm, after which he will return to his hotel for the night, officials said.
Sources indicate that the visiting leader will have a busy itinerary on Friday. The day is expected to begin with a meeting with the President of India at Rashtrapati Bhavan around 11 am, followed by a visit to Rajghat. After spending 30 minutes at Rajghat, Putin will move to Hyderabad House, where he will stay until lunch, hosted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi around 2 pm. The afternoon will be devoted to a series of meetings at Hyderabad House, with discussions anticipated on bilateral cooperation across various sectors.
The Russian President is also expected to give a press statement just before lunch.
Before concluding his visit, he is expected to stop at Bharat Mandapam after spending an hour at lunch.
In the evening, he will attend the RT TV launch before moving to Rashtrapati Bhawan for dinner around 7.30 pm.
He will depart the country within 27 hours of arrival, wrapping up what officials describe as a short but strategically important engagement.
This is the first visit of Russian President Vladimir Putin to India in four years and his first since the Ukraine conflict began.
For New Delhi, this visit comes at a time when the government is trying to maintain its strategic autonomy, manage pressure from Washington and other Western capitals, and rely on Moscow for critical defence supplies, crude oil, and fertilisers. For Moscow, it is an opportunity to reaffirm a “special and privileged strategic partnership" with one of its most stable long-term partners and to establish new economic arrangements that circumvent sanctions and a fragmenting global order.
The Kremlin has described the India-Russia relationship as one rooted in trust and continuity. During a briefing in New Delhi, Russian spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stated that Russia has stood “shoulder to shoulder" with India through significant phases of nation-building, adding that this continuity remains central to Moscow’s foreign policy.
Indian officials have highlighted the role of annual summits in maintaining momentum even during periods of global turbulence. Putin first visited India in 2000, and this will be the 23rd edition of the summit mechanism.
