Dr. Farooq Azam, Senior Cryosphere Specialist at ICIMOD, analyzed the flash flood disaster in Nepal. He stated that initial assessments suggest an ice and rock avalanche triggered the flood in the Nepal Himalayas. Comparing the event to past Indian disasters, Dr. Azam noted that 'nearest comparison can be made with Chamoli' in process, though the magnitude is much bigger, while downstream impact resembles the Kedarnath disaster. He reported that around 10 hydropower projects, 70 bridges, and 20,000 to 30,000 households were affected, with over 1,500 deaths. He emphasized that climate change is making the Himalayan cryosphere increasingly vulnerable to triggers such as earthquakes or heavy snowmelt.
