India formally joined Pax Silica, a United States-led strategic initiative aimed at building secure supply chains for artificial intelligence, semiconductors and critical technologies, marking a significant step in technology cooperation between New Delhi and Washington.

Announcing the development, US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor described India’s entry as “strategic," saying the initiative would enable trusted partners to collaborate more closely and share reliable artificial intelligence technologies. India joined the framework on the sidelines of the Global AI Impact Summit in New Delhi.

What Is Pax Silica?

Pax Silica is a US-led international initiative designed to create a secure and resilient supply chain for technologies that power modern economies, especially semiconductors and artificial intelligence. The name reflects its core focus on silicon, the foundational material used to make semiconductor chips that power everything from smartphones and data centres to advanced AI systems.

The initiative seeks to strengthen cooperation among trusted partner countries across the entire technology chain, spanning critical minerals used in chip production, semiconductor manufacturing, artificial intelligence infrastructure and the energy and logistics systems needed to support them. Its broader goal is to ensure that partner countries can develop and deploy advanced technologies without relying on vulnerable or politically risky supply chains.

Why Pax Silica Was Created?

Pax Silica reflects growing global concern over supply chain vulnerabilities that have emerged in recent years, particularly during the Covid-19 pandemic and amid rising geopolitical tensions. The initiative is based on a new economic security approach that treats technology supply chains as essential to national power and economic growth. It responds to increasing demand among US partners to deepen cooperation in emerging technologies, particularly artificial intelligence, which is widely seen as a transformative force that will shape future economies.

There is also growing recognition that secure and trustworthy technology systems are necessary to safeguard national security and prosperity. Pax Silica aims to reduce risks arising from excessive dependence on single suppliers, ensure fair market practices and protect sensitive technologies and critical infrastructure from disruption or coercion.

Which Countries Are Part Of Pax Silica?

When Pax Silica was launched in December, India was not among its founding members. The inaugural summit brought together key US allies and partners including Japan, South Korea, Singapore, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, Israel, the United Arab Emirates and Australia. In addition, Taiwan, the European Union, Canada and the OECD participated as guests and contributors, reflecting the broad coalition of advanced economies involved in global AI and semiconductor supply chains. India’s entry now adds one of the world’s fastest-growing digital economies to the initiative.
