Islamabad: At least eight people were killed and 12 others injured after an explosion ripped through a house in Islamabad’s Sector G-7/2 during wedding celebrations on Sunday, officials said. The deceased included both the bride and the groom.

According to Dr Aneeza Jalil, spokesperson for the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS), six bodies and 11 injured people were brought to the hospital, prompting the imposition of an emergency on the directions of Executive Director Dr Rana Imran Sikander. One of the injured suffered around 20 per cent burn injuries and was admitted to the burns centre. Later, nine of the injured were discharged, while two remained hospitalised, with one in an unstable condition requiring surgery.

Islamabad Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) Sahibzada Yusuf said at least four houses were damaged in the blast. He confirmed that the bride and groom were among those killed, adding that two bodies and one injured person were taken to Capital Hospital. The explosion occurred at a wedding venue with guests present, and all those trapped were rescued from the rubble using specialised equipment. An inquiry has been ordered to determine the exact cause, though initial indications suggest a gas cylinder explosion.

Islamabad Chief Commissioner Muhammad Ali Randhawa said the blast appeared to have been caused by a gas leak, adding that one house had been completely demolished. Arrangements were made to move the bodies to a nearby ground before burial.

Hanif Masih, father of the deceased groom, said the wedding had taken place on Saturday and the family had returned home late at night. He said he was sleeping in an adjacent room when the explosion occurred. “By the time I reached the spot, everything had already been destroyed," he said, adding that his daughter-in-law, son and sister-in-law were among the dead, while other family members were injured.

Senate Chairman Yusuf Raza Gilani expressed grief over the incident, calling it “heart-wrenching" and extending condolences to the bereaved families. He raised concern over recurring gas cylinder explosions and urged authorities to enforce safety regulations strictly and educate the public to prevent such tragedies.
