A massive explosion in Syria’s Idlib countryside sent towering plumes of smoke into the sky, scorching a populated area and triggering panic across nearby villages, according to local reports and dramatic visuals shared by Russian state media outlet RTNews.
At least five Defence Ministry workers were killed and nine others injured after what authorities described as an “ammo depot" blast on Wednesday. Several more people are feared missing under the rubble, with emergency teams still carrying out search operations at the site.
Video from the area showed huge, rolling clouds of grey smoke bursting upward in multiple waves, blanketing the landscape and residential blocks in seconds. A second video showed students in nearby schools were seen scrambling for safety as the shockwave rippled through residential areas close to the depot.
Olive groves and scattered homes in the foreground of the video highlighted how close the detonation was to civilian areas, while the sheer size of the smoke plume suggested that a massive amount of ammunition exploded in the depot.
Images circulating online showed widespread destruction, fire and damage to farmland, while videos showed shrapnel reaching shops and residential buildings.
News18 could not independently verify the authenticity of the videos and images of the blast being shared online.
The security forces in the region later released a statement where they said that the explosion that occurred in the town of Kafr Takharim was “caused by a warehouse containing missiles and ammunition, and occurred due to work underway" at a site nearby.
The Idlib region was a bastion of rebel and jihadist groups including foreign fighters before Islamist-led forces overthrew longtime ruler Bashar al-Assad last December in a lightning offensive.
Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, the former armed faction once led by interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa, was the dominant group in the region before Assad’s overthrow, and some groups of foreign fighters still have bases there.
