The imprisonment of former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan has been a very contentious part of the country’s politics. Now, social media handles from Afghanistan and Pakistan are rife with rumours that the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) supremo was mysteriously killed in the Adiala jail.

Afghanistan media reported that Khan has allegedly been mysteriously killed, and his body has been moved out of the prison. Several social media handles, including the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Balochistan, have posted about his alleged assassination.

This came as thousands of PTI supporters also gathered outside Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi and raised slogans against his arrest. Notably, this is not the first time such rumours have spread on social media as Khan remains under confinement.

Imran Khan’s Sisters ‘Assaulted’

The rumours came after Imran Khan’s three sisters were “brutally assaulted" by police for what the party said was “their crime for seeking a meeting with Imran Khan". The sisters were camped outside the prison after being denied a meeting with him for a month when police personnel pounced on them and brutally assaulted them, the PTI claimed.

In a letter to Punjab police chief Usman Anwar, Khan’s sisters said the violence was “brutal and orchestrated and carried out by policemen without provocation".

“We peacefully protested over concerns for his health condition. We neither blocked roads nor obstructed public movement, nor engaged in any unlawful conduct. Yet, without warning or provocation, the streetlights in the area were abruptly switched off, deliberately casting the scene into darkness. What followed was a brutal and orchestrated assault by Punjab police personnel," said Noreen Niazi.

Niazi alleged that she was seized by her hair and thrown violently to the ground, while other women present outside the jail were slapped and dragged. “Police’s conduct was part of a broader and troubling pattern of indiscriminate force used against peacefully protesting citizens over three years, reflecting a troubling impunity," she added.

Khan’s sisters demanded that the IGP Punjab immediately initiate proceedings against all police personnel involved in this brutal assault.

Imran Khan’s Imprisonment

The cricketer-turned-politician has been in jail since August 2023, in multiple cases against him. He is currently lodged in the high-security Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi. Last month, his party claimed that he was kept in “solitary confinement" and his cell door remains shut at all times.

In January, a court sentenced the former prime minister to 14 years in prison, while his wife was handed a seven-year term in one of the many cases brought against them. Despite the crackdown, Khan’s popularity has refused to fade. His continued grip on the public imagination poses a threat to the fragile coalition government that blocked PTI’s return to power in last year’s tightly controlled elections.

Removed from office in 2022 by a no-confidence vote, the former cricket captain has since taken on Pakistan’s most entrenched institution, its military. His rare and unfiltered criticism of the generals has drawn both public support and state retaliation.
