At least 33 people were killed as Thailand witnessed its worst floods in years, prompting authorities to deploy military ships and helicopters to support relief efforts.

According to BBC, the deluge has hit 10 provinces across the country’s south over the past week, with the city of Hat Yai, a business hub bordering Malaysia, recording its heaviest rainfall in 300 years – 335mm in a single day.

Government spokesperson Siripong Angkasakulkiat told reporters that about 20 helicopters and 200 boats drafted into the Hat Yai rescue effort faced difficulty reaching stranded people.

Reuters cited television images showing brown waters rushing through Hat Yai’s commercial streets, while residents waded through high waters, clinging to floating polystyrene boxes as rubber boats evacuated others in orange life vests.

Photos and videos have emerged showing vehicles and houses submerged in the city, while desperate residents await rescue on their rooftops.

“Please help. I’m very worried about my mother," Reuters quoted one person, adding that she had been unable to contact the 53-year-old in Hat Yai since Saturday, when domestic supplies were down to just a bottle of water and two packs of instant noodles.

Reuters quoted Thailand navy stating that the aircraft carrier, Chakri Naruebet, set out from its home port on Tuesday to provide air support, medical assistance and meals in the relief efforts.

It further stated that medical teams on board the aircraft carrier will convert it into a “floating hospital" if necessary.

Floods have affected eight states in neighbouring Malaysia, killing one person.

In Indonesia, at least 19 people have been killed and at least seven others remained buried under landslides in North Sumatra, BBC quoted the Indonesian Search and Rescue Agency.
