Canadian High Commissioner Christopher Cooter on Wednesday hailed the new chapter of partnership with India, saying both the countries were heading towards building renewed trust, deepening cooperation in critical areas, and taking concrete steps to enhance shared prosperity.

Speaking at an event in New Delhi, he underscored how Canada and India have the tools, resources and the talent to build a partnership that is not only resilient, but transformative.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and Prime Minister Modi recently held a meeting on the sidelines of the G20 Leaders’ Summit in Johannesburg, building on their earlier engagement at the G7 Summit in Kananaskis. They welcomed the New Roadmap for India-Canada relations launched in October. The Prime Ministers also agreed to launch negotiations for a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA).

According to Cooter, the CEPA is a vital signal in the direction of the relationship, which will unlock new opportunities for businesses, accelerate technology cooperation, and strengthen supply chain resilience.

Canada is poised to be the reliable partner India needs to help power its ambitious growth targets towards 2030 and beyond, according to Cooter.

Bilateral trade reached US$22 billion in 2024, with a target of US$50 billion by 2030. The country is looking forward to investing in clean technologies, AI, quantum computing, aerospace, and advanced manufacturing, as practical pathways to jobs, security, and sustainability.

Cooter highlighted how the launch of the Australia-Canada-India Technology and Innovation Partnership (ACITI) has added a powerful international dimension to this effort.

Cooter said India and Canada could now focus on leveraging the October roadmap to de-risk supply chains and scale innovation in critical sectors; the role resumption of free trade negotiations in anchoring economic security and technology cooperation; joint programmes – from clean energy to climate-resilient agriculture – to address global challenges while creating shared prosperity; and expanding university partnerships and talent mobility while ensuring people-to-people ties remain the bedrock of the relationship.
