Video: Family watches helplessly as Nepal floods sweep away everything around them

Natural disasters often leave behind remarkable stories of survival. Amid the devastation caused by the flash floods in Nepal, one such escape caught attention online.

A viral video showed at least three members of a family as raging floodwaters descended on the area around their home. Within moments, the muddy torrent gathered speed, engulfing the surrounding land and sweeping away structures in its path.

The family appeared perilously close to the advancing water. Yet all three survived, as did their home.

As the flood tore through the area, the building remained standing with relatively little visible damage even as structures around it were swept away.

The footage quickly went viral, with many social media users asking whether the family had survived. Their concerns were put to rest when another user shared a subsequent video confirming that they were safe.

The durability of the house also became a talking point online. Viewers noted how the structure withstood the torrent while buildings and debris around it were carried away.

One social media user was so impressed that he said the person who built the house deserved the "Nepal Ratna Man Padavi" award, praising the builder for what he described as the exceptional architectural skills of earlier generations.

The family's escape came amid widespread devastation across the region. At least 587 people have died and nearly 1,500 remain missing on the Nepal and Tibet sides of the border after flash floods tore through central Nepal on Wednesday. The floods were triggered by an ice-rock avalanche following a glacial collapse near the border.

India has offered to send NDRF personnel to assist Nepal's rescue operations. The offer came amid reports that Kathmandu had turned down requests from several countries to deploy search teams following the disaster.

At a media briefing on Friday, the Ministry of External Affairs said India's immediate priority was to locate its nationals who remained uncontactable. According to the MEA, 320 Indian nationals and 100 people of Indian origin were still out of touch.
