Norway’s crown princess’s eldest son has been arrested, just before the commencement of his trial on multiple charges, including rape, bringing more trouble and embarassment to the royal family.

As per a report by AP, Marius Borg Høiby was arrested on Sunday evening and is accused of assault, threats with a knife and violation of a restraining order. According to the police, the authorities have requested a four-week detention, citing the risk of reoffending.

Høiby is scheduled to appear in Oslo district court on Tuesday. The indictment against him includes 38 counts, encompassing rape, abuse in a close relationship against a former partner, acts of violence against another individual, and the transportation of 3.5 kilograms (7.7 pounds) of marijuana.

Additional charges include making death threats and traffic violations.Høiby has been under scrutiny since 2024 following multiple arrests for various alleged offences. He was indicted in August but remained free pending trial until his recent arrest.

He is the son of Crown Princess Mette-Marit from a previous relationship and stepson of the heir to the throne, Crown Prince Haakon. He has no royal title or official duties.

The indictment details four alleged rapes between 2018 and November 2024, alleged violence and threats against a former partner from the summer of 2022 to the fall of 2023, and two alleged acts of violence against a subsequent partner, along with restraining order violations.

Høiby’s defence team has stated he “denies all charges of sexual abuse and the majority of the charges regarding violence." Crown Prince Haakon mentioned last week that he and Mette-Marit do not plan to attend the court proceedings and that the royal household will refrain from commenting during the trial.

Haakon emphasised that Høiby is not part of the royal household and, as a citizen of Norway, has the same responsibilities and rights as everyone else. He expressed confidence that all parties involved will ensure the trial is conducted in an orderly, proper, and fair manner.
