The United Kingdom’s Charity Commission has cleared Prince Harry of bullying allegations made during a public row over his African charity, Sentebale. However, it criticised all parties involved for allowing the internal dispute to unfold in the public eye, damaging the charity’s reputation, news agency AFP reported.
The controversy erupted earlier this year when Sophie Chandauka, chair of Sentebale, accused Prince Harry of “bullying" after a disagreement over governance. The dispute intensified in March and April, prompting the trustees to step down. Later, Prince Harry and co-founder Prince Seeiso of Lesotho also announced their resignation from the charity they established in 2006.
Sentebale, launched by Harry in memory of his mother Princess Diana, supports children affected by HIV and AIDS in Lesotho and Botswana.
Following a months-long investigation, the Charity Commission stated on Wednesday it found “no evidence of widespread or systemic bullying or harassment, including misogyny or misogynoir at the charity."
However, it noted serious governance issues, including a lack of clear delegation, which led to mismanagement. The commission has now issued a plan to “address governance weaknesses."
Sentebale said it welcomed the findings.
Chandauka, who was appointed to the voluntary post in 2023 and remains the charity’s chair. She said she “appreciated" the conclusions. Although she did not address the dismissal of the bullying claims.
According to AFP report, Harry had earlier described the situation as “heartbreaking," accusing others of spreading “blatant lies."
A spokesperson for Prince Harry said the probe “falls troublingly short in many regards.
“Primarily the fact that the consequences of the current chair’s actions will not be borne by her — but by the children who rely on Sentebale’s support," AFP quoted the spokesperson’s statement.
Chandauka had previously criticised Harry for involving a Netflix crew at a polo fundraiser and for Meghan’s unplanned appearance at the event.
The Commission urged all parties to refocus on the charity’s mission and those it serves.
