Fort Stewart, the largest US Army installation east of the Mississippi River, was placed on lockdown following an active shooter incident, according to officials. The base, located in southern Georgia, confirmed the situation on its official Facebook page, urging all personnel to take immediate safety precautions.

The incident occurred around 11 a.m. ET in the area housing the 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team, officials said. Law enforcement responded swiftly to the scene and while casualties have been reported, authorities have not yet released information about the number of injured or whether there were any fatalities.

“Lockdown your facility immediately, stay inside, close and lock all windows and doors. Keep telephone lines open and report accountability to your leadership," the base instructed in its alert.

Georgia Governor Brian Kemp responded to the developing situation on social media platform X (formerly Twitter) saying, “We are keeping the victims, their families, and all those who answer the call to serve in our hearts and prayers, and we ask that Georgians everywhere do the same."
