Five US Army soldiers were injured in an active shooter incident at Fort Stewart, the largest Army installation east of the Mississippi River. The shooting occurred within the 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team (2nd ABCT) complex, prompting a swift lockdown and emergency response.
According to a statement from the US Army, all five soldiers were treated on-site by emergency medical personnel and subsequently transported to Winn Army Community Hospital for further treatment. Their current conditions have not been disclosed but the US Army confirmed that there is no active threat to the community.
Law enforcement was dispatched to the scene and the suspect was apprehended while the base was placed on lockdown. Although, the main cantonment area reopened , the 2nd ABCT complex remains under lockdown as the investigation continues, the US Army said.
Fort Stewart, located in southern Georgia near Hinesville, is home to the 3rd Infantry Division and thousands of active-duty service members. The base issued an immediate alert on its official Facebook page urging personnel to “stay inside, close and lock all windows and doors."
Georgia Governor Brian Kemp reacted to the incident on X (formerly Twitter), expressing sympathy for those affected, saying, “We are keeping the victims, their families, and all those who answer the call to serve in our hearts and prayers and we ask that Georgians everywhere do the same."
Military officials said the incident remains under investigation.
