Poland’s foreign minister Radosław Sikorski described the railway sabotage incidents as “an act of state terrorism" carried out by Russia, warning that the attacks were intended to cause mass casualties. Speaking in the Polish parliament, Radosław Sikorski said the incidents posed a direct threat to public safety and were part of a broader campaign of destabilisation.

“The clear intention was to cause human casualties," he said, adding that Poland would respond “not only diplomatically," though he did not elaborate on potential actions.

Radosław Sikorski also warned of a “tsunami" of disinformation that he said would follow the attacks, urging the public to rely only on verified information.

Poland Says Russian Intelligence Ordered Sabotage

The comments came as Polish authorities escalated their investigation into what they describe as coordinated acts of sabotage on railway lines used to transport aid to Ukraine. Prosecutors launched an inquiry into “acts of sabotage of a terrorist nature" committed for the benefit of foreign intelligence.

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk saud that Russia’s intelligence services orchestrated the explosion on a rail line linking Warsaw to the Ukrainian border. He said two Ukrainian nationals, allegedly working as Russian agents, carried out the attack.

“The identified perpetrators are two Ukrainian citizens who have been cooperating with Russian intelligence services for a long time," Donald Tusk said.

A government spokesperson earlier said that “everything indicates" Russian secret services initiated the sabotage, with evidence collected at the scenes supporting that assessment.

Explosions Targeted Key Rail Routes

The first explosion occurred near the village of Mika, about 100 km southeast of Warsaw, damaging rail tracks and forcing passenger trains to halt. In a separate incident, power lines were destroyed near Puławy, roughly 50 km from Lublin, an area close to major routes supplying Ukraine. According to prosecutors, the attacks posed an immediate risk of a major rail disaster, “threatening the lives and health of many people and property on a large scale." Although no injuries were reported, officials said the severity of the attempted sabotage was unprecedented.

The sabotage has heightened fears within NATO about Russia’s covert operations across the alliance’s eastern flank, particularly in countries supporting Ukraine.
