Russia launched a large-scale attack on Ukraine overnight, firing more than 475 drones and 48 missiles across multiple regions. At least 10 people were killed, and dozens more were injured.
The strikes have cast doubt on the efforts of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to restart peace talks during his visit to Turkey.
Zelenskyy arrived in Ankara on Wednesday with hopes of reviving stalled negotiations over the ongoing conflict with Russia. However, Russia’s continued missile and drone strikes, including an attack on the western city of Ternopil, have made progress seem unlikely.
In Ternopil, two multi-storey apartment blocks were hit by missiles, causing severe damage. Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiga confirmed that residential buildings, not military targets, were struck.
Photos from the scene showed fires burning through damaged buildings and debris scattered across the streets.
“Not military targets, but simply someone’s homes. This morning Russia struck them, killing at least 10 people and injuring four dozens more," Sybiga wrote on social media.
Rescue teams are working to evacuate trapped residents, and authorities warned that the death toll may rise. The strikes also caused a spike in chlorine levels in the air, prompting officials to advise residents to stay indoors.
Ukraine’s air force reported that most of the drones and missiles were intercepted, with 442 drones and 41 missiles destroyed. However, the attacks still caused significant damage, with at least 46 people injured in Kharkiv and other areas of western Ukraine also affected.
Ahead of his talks in Turkey, Zelenskyy urged Ukraine’s Western allies to do more to put pressure on Russia. He said the latest attacks showed that current international measures were insufficient.
“Every brazen attack against ordinary life shows that the pressure on Russia is insufficient," the Ukrainian President said.
Zelenskyy’s trip to Turkey was aimed at restarting peace talks, and he hoped to engage in discussions with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. A senior Ukrainian official said that the goal was to encourage the United States to re-engage in peace efforts and consider stronger sanctions on Russia.
