Romania scrambled fighter jets after a drone crossed into its airspace during a Russian strike on Ukrainian infrastructure near the border, the country’s defence ministry said. The incident marks the latest spillover from Moscow’s attacks on targets close to NATO territory.
The European Union and NATO member shares a 650 km (400 mile) border with Ukraine and has repeatedly reported Russian drone fragments falling on its territory as Moscow targets Ukrainian port facilities along the Danube River, directly across from Romanian villages.
Drone Detected 8 Km Inside Romania
According to the Romania’s defence ministry, radar systems first detected the drone 8 km inside Romanian airspace, near the villages of Periprava and Chilia Veche in Tulcea County. The drone signal later disappeared from the radar before reappearing intermittently over a 12-minute period, this time near villages in Galați County.
Romania said it scrambled two Eurofighter Typhoons- part of the German air policing mission stationed in Romania- followed by two Romanian F-16 fighter jets. Authorities also issued warnings to residents in the southeastern counties of Tulcea and Galati, urging them to take cover as a precaution. The ministry said it had received no reports of drones hitting Romanian territory.
Regional Airspace Tensions Rise
The drone incursion comes amid heightened vigilance across NATO’s eastern flank. Poland, which borders western Ukraine, temporarily closed the Rzeszow and Lublin airports on Wednesday and scrambled both Polish and allied aircraft to safeguard its airspace during the Russian strikes. Romania has previously protested to Russia over multiple incidents involving drone debris landing on its soil.
