Donald Trump launched a fresh attack on the media on Tuesday, targeting an ABC News reporter just days after calling another woman journalist “piggy" during a separate exchange about convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
Trump’s latest clash occurred in the Oval Office during a meeting with Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.
The President threatened ABC’s broadcast license after reporter Mary Bruce asked a series of questions about whether the Trump family business’s dealings with the Saudis posed a conflict of interest, and later questioned the crown prince over the 2018 murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi.
The earlier incident, involving Bloomberg reporter Catherine Lucey, took place aboard Air Force One on Friday but only surfaced on social media on Tuesday.
“Quiet. Quiet, piggy," Trump told Lucey, pointing at her, after she asked why he would not release material on Epstein, “if nothing is incriminating in the files."
CNN journalist Jake Tapper later called Trump’s remark “disgusting and completely unacceptable."
In the Oval Office, Bruce asked Prince Mohammed, “US intelligence concluded that you orchestrated the brutal murder of a journalist, 9/11 families are furious that you are here in the Oval Office. Why should Americans trust you?"
Trump cut in angrily, saying, “ABC fake news. One of the worst in the business."
Trump insisted he has “nothing to do" with the Trump Organisation, which is run by his two eldest sons, and noted that the company had just announced a deal with a Saudi developer for a Maldives resort.
He also defended Prince Mohammed, telling Bruce, “You don’t have to embarrass our guest by asking a question like that."
Tensions rose when Bruce later asked about Epstein, as Congress voted overwhelmingly on Tuesday to order the release of files related to the financier, who died by suicide in 2019 while awaiting trial.
Trump shot back, saying, “It’s not the question that I mind. It’s your attitude. I think you are a terrible reporter."
He added that he had “nothing to do" with Epstein, calling the scandal a “hoax," and telling Bruce, “And your crappy company is one of the perpetrators."
The President then urged the head of the US broadcast regulator to “look at" the possibility of stripping ABC of its license, before pointing at Bruce and declaring, “No more questions from you."
