US President Donald Trump met Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman (MBS) at the White House on Tuesday, 18 November. The meeting covered key regional and economic issues, including Saudi Arabia’s potential accession to the Abraham Accords and massive commercial investments in the United States. Discussions also included the sale of F-35 fighter jets to Riyadh.
Saudi Arabia on Abraham Accords
During the meeting, Trump said that MBS expressed a desire to join the Abraham Accords, a framework that formalises diplomatic relations between Israel and Arab states. The Crown Prince, however, attached conditions, emphasising the need for a guaranteed pathway toward a two-state solution for the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
Trump conveyed optimism over Saudi Arabia’s positive inclination, while noting that no formal commitment was made. “I think you have a very good feeling toward the Abraham Accords?" Trump asked, to which MBS responded, “Yes, we want peace for the Israelis and the Palestinians."
The Abraham Accords, first signed in 2020 between Israel, the UAE, and Bahrain, represent a historic shift in Middle Eastern diplomacy. Later agreements included Sudan and Morocco.
The accords aim to foster regional peace, economic collaboration, security cooperation, and cultural exchanges. While they have opened new avenues for policy and business engagement, some critics argue they sideline the Palestinian issue and weaken Arab solidarity on statehood.
The Saudi Crown Prince described the meeting with Trump as a “healthy discussion" on both the Abraham Accords and broader regional security. He emphasised Saudi Arabia’s support for a two-state solution and indicated plans to strengthen ties with Israel, suggesting the accords could expand soon.
US-Saudi ties
In addition to diplomatic discussions, the two leaders focused on economic cooperation. Trump announced that Saudi Arabia pledged nearly $1 trillion in commercial deals with US companies. The pact includes defence sales, advanced technologies, energy partnerships, aerospace ventures, and investments in sports sectors.
Plans for the sale of F-35 fighter jets to Saudi Arabia were also discussed, though negotiations remain ongoing amid Israeli concerns about regional military balance. The talks additionally covered potential agreements for the sale of advanced artificial intelligence chips to Riyadh.
