Pakistan has suspended the Jaffar Express train service for three days on grounds of security after intelligence suggested threats from the Tehreek-e-Taliban (TTP) sleeper cells and Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) fighters, top intelligence sources told CNN-News18.

The train service will be suspended from November 9 to 11. Sources indicated that the TTP and BLA fighters are targeting rail infrastructure and passenger movement along the Quetta-Zhob and Bolan sections in their campaign against the Pakistan military.

Intelligence sources said they suspected joint attacks or sabotage attempts to target the political and military movements in Pakistan’s restive Balochistan province. There are also changes of increased cross-border militant coordination as ties between Pakistan and Afghanistan are at rock bottom, following deadly border clashes.

The attacks are also suspected to test Pakistan’s response and rail security preparedness before larger strikes, said intelligence sources. The Jaffar Express has been targeted multiple times over recent months, underscoring persistent security challenges in the region.

Last month, the train came under attack near the Sultankot area close to the Sindh-Balochistan border, when a planted explosive device detonated on the tracks, derailing at least six coaches. The Baloch rebel group, Baloch Republic Guards, claimed responsibility for the attack. Several people were injured in the attack.

On September 24, at least a dozen people, including women and children, were injured in a bombing attack on the same train in Balochistan’s Mastung district, 10 hours after a previous attack. he explosion caused six bogies to derail, one of which overturned, injuring several passengers on board.

On August 10, six coaches of the same train were derailed by an improvised explosive device, injuring four passengers. Just days earlier, on August 4, gunmen fired at the train’s pilot engine near Kolpur. The Baloch Liberation Army (BLA) claimed responsibility for that attack.

In March this year, the Jaffar Express suffered its worst attack when it was hijacked in the Bolan area, leading to the deaths of 21 passengers and four security personnel. Security forces later killed 33 militants in a targeted operation.
