Flight operations in Nepal’s Tribhuvan Airport were impacted following a technical glitch in the lights along the runway on Saturday, according to airport officials.

According to officials, the disruption affected both domestic and international flights, prompting authorities to ground aircraft as a safety precaution. Technical teams have been deployed to identify and resolve the issue, and efforts are underway to restore normal operations at the earliest.

A spokesperson for the airport told news agency ANI that there was a problem in the airfield lighting system of the runway. “At least five flights are on hold as of now. All arrival and departure flights, domestic and international, have been delayed. The problem was detected at 5:30 pm (local time)," said Renji Sherpa, spokesperson for the TIA.

Tribhuvan Airport is Nepal’s main aviation hub, handling the majority of the country’s air traffic.

Flight Operations In India Hit By Technical Glitch

This came after flight operations in Nepal’s neighbour, India, were affected after a massive technical glitch in the Automatic Message Switching System (AMSS) in Delhi, which supports Air Traffic Control (ATC) flight planning.

The temporary outage, which began on Friday, led to heavy disruption in flight schedules across airlines operating from Delhi. At least 800 flights were delayed and around 20 were cancelled, as per airport and aviation sources.

The AMSS failure at the Delhi Airport started impacting flights in Mumbai, Jaipur, Lucknow, Varanasi, and other major international airports, as originating flights from Delhi to these airports were delayed. Several airports issued advisories, urging passengers to check in with their respective airlines for updates on flight status.

On Saturday, officials said the temporary AMSS outage that affected ATC operations had been fully resolved, and normal flight services are being progressively restored not only at Delhi but also at several other airports in northern India.

The IGI Airport in Delhi, one of the country’s busiest airports, plunged into chaos on Friday as more than 300 domestic as well as international flights were delayed due to technical problems with the air traffic control system. IndiGo, Air India, Air India Express, SpiceJet and Akasa Air said there are delays in their flights at the Delhi airport due to the technical issues.
