A US official has revealed that the elite Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) of Iran plotted to assassinate Einat Kranz Neiger, the Israeli ambassador to Mexico, beginning in late 2024 and continuing into the first half of 2025.
The plot was reportedly foiled and “contained," with no immediate threat now posed, according to the official, who spoke anonymously to Reuters. Details of how the operation was disrupted have not been disclosed.
US and Israeli authorities say this alleged attempt fits a larger pattern of Iran targeting diplomats, journalists, dissidents, and others abroad.
A Broader Pattern of Targeted Attacks
The alleged plot fits into what Western intelligence agencies describe as a broader Iranian campaign of revenge operations abroad. Over the past two years, Iran has been accused of attempting to assassinate or abduct Israeli diplomats, Iranian dissidents, and journalists in countries including Turkey, Georgia, Cyprus, Colombia, and Kenya.
US and Israeli officials have said that Iran’s Quds Force, the IRGC’s external operations wing, has been tasked with carrying out retaliatory strikes against Israeli and Western interests, particularly after a string of assassinations targeting Iranian military figures and nuclear scientists.
Washington and several allied nations have repeatedly accused Iran and its network of proxy groups of orchestrating violent operations abroad, targeting Tehran’s critics and perceived enemies.
Iranian officials, however, have consistently dismissed these accusations as politically motivated fabrications intended to discredit the government.
Last year, security agencies in Britain and Sweden warned that Iran was using criminal intermediaries to carry out violent attacks on foreign soil. The UK’s Home Office reported that its intelligence services had foiled at least 20 Iran-linked plots since 2022, including plans for abductions and assassinations.
More than a dozen other countries have also condemned a surge in Iran-backed operations, accusing Tehran’s intelligence apparatus of engaging in cross-border kidnapping, intimidation, and assassination plots against dissidents and journalists.
In October, MI5 Director General Ken McCallum said that Iran was “frantically attempting to silence critics worldwide," citing examples from Australia, the Netherlands, and other nations. Australian authorities had uncovered Iranian involvement in antisemitic plots, while Dutch investigators exposed a failed assassination attempt attributed to Iranian operatives.
Mexico’s Response
The Mexican government, however, said it has no official record or intelligence indicating an active attempt on the Israeli envoy’s life. Mexico’s foreign ministry added that it remains in close contact with the Israeli Embassy and allied intelligence partners but has not received any formal alert from Washington or Tel Aviv regarding the case.
Growing Iranian Footprint in Latin America
Experts say Iran has been expanding its diplomatic and covert networks across Latin America, particularly in countries like Venezuela, Nicaragua, and Bolivia, where Tehran maintains close relations. Analysts note that while Mexico is not an ally of Iran, its geographic proximity to the US makes it a potential site for symbolic or proxy operations.
U.S. and Israeli Coordination
The US official emphasized that Washington is working closely with Mexico and Israel to ensure the safety of Israeli diplomatic personnel and to monitor potential Iranian intelligence activity in the region. “We take any threat to diplomats extremely seriously," the official said, adding that deterrence and vigilance remain top priorities.
Israel has long been a primary target of Iranian hostility, a tension that escalated sharply this year after Israel’s military, supported by US bombers, carried out airstrikes on Iranian nuclear facilities in June, intensifying the ongoing shadow war between the two nations.
