OpenAI Brings ChatGPT Atlas Browser With AI Agents And Built-In Search: How It Compares With Chrome AI

OpenAI is bringing its ChatGPT-powered browser to mac users

Google’s Chrome and Perplexity Comet finally gets the OpenAI challenger we expected and it is called ChatGPT Atlas. The new web browser from OpenAI has the AI traits that were on display during the livestream on Tuesday. 

Sam Altman, CEO, OpenAI was part of the event where he had other colleagues walk us through the features, new AI agent modes and how you can shop without actually searching for products. OpenAI has been touting its web browser for a while and the official details have been shared with good news for Mac users.

AI browsers are specialising in AI agents and ChatGPT Atlas gets it if you have the Plus or the Pro subscription. For everyone else, Atlas works like an AI-powered web browser with the help of ChatGPT which lets you search for content and other local files. You also have the memory option so that ChatGPT can store the search (or not) but also lets you use it in the incognito mode if needed. 

Comet has shown the value of having AI agents poking on the side and giving you context and resources with work. Atlas is going to offer that and promises to do a lot more in the near future. Google’s Chrome is gradually getting the AI powers with Gemini but its rollout has been limited to the US for now. 

AI agents are showing the new way of using a web browser, more like letting the AI do the work, while you do other tasks.

How ChatGPT Atlas Compares With Chrome And Comet AI Browsers

The demo from OpenAI shows how it plans to integrate ChatGPT in all corners, including with a help of a + button to let you edit mails and improve its context before hitting send. You can even summon ChatGPT during anytime on the browser and help you with queries or even set up the shopping cart with your favourite (or previously bought) items. 

You can ask questions about any web page and the assistant will answer from the tabs that are open and also through the relevant browsing history.

This is similar to Google’s new Chrome addition where Gemini AI can perform agentic tasks, but that is only available to users in the US region for now. There is a lot of similarities between Atlas, Comet and the Chrome Gemini AI version but the main focus is on ChatGPT that is being entrusted with keeping the new browser ticking.

More importantly, OpenAI is giving people the choice to sign in and let ChatGPT handle all their operations behind the scenes. This is an optional feature and not enabled by default.

The company has found Atlas useful not only for browsing the web, but also help solve complex problems, or even understand the nuances of a particular subject. This is all about ChatGPT built on a browser to serve not just one but multiple needs.

Safety At The Core

OpenAI is conscious of the safety risks with the use of these browsers and how much data they use to give you the optimum experience. It claims to have put the safety checks in place without actually telling us how and what it will do. 

Atlas is coming to the free ChatGPT users as well but if you want to unlock the AI agent mode you need to pay up for the AI chatbot. Windows and Android users should be getting it in the next few months.
