As the Bangladesh ist Party (BNP) secured a majority in general elections, the opposition Jamaat-e-Islami said it has “serious questions about the integrity of the results process."

“We express our sincere gratitude to you for casting your votes in large numbers throughout the day in such a positive and peaceful atmosphere," said Jamaat-e-Islami in a statement.

“However, we are not satisfied with the process surrounding the election results. From candidates of the 11-party alliance narrowly and suspiciously losing in various constituencies, to repeated inconsistencies and fabrications in unofficial result announcements, the Election Commission’s reluctance to publish voter turnout percentages, and indications that a section of the administration leaned towards a major party- all of this undoubtedly raises serious questions about the integrity of the results process," it added.

The ongoing parliamentary vote count in Bangladesh is being seen as a turning point in the country’s politics following the fall of the Awami League government in August 2024. Early trends suggest the election could open a new political phase.

In a post on X early Friday, the BNP Media Cell said, “The Bangladesh ist Party-BNP is set to form the government after winning the majority of seats."

Initial reports from local media indicate a strong performance by the Bangladesh ist Party (BNP). According to The Daily Star, counting has been completed in 194 constituencies, while 105 seats are yet to be declared. Out of 299 seats, BNP and its allies have so far secured 149, with Jamaat and its partners winning 39.

As counting continues, projections cited by the Dhaka Tribune show BNP leading in 151 constituencies in the country’s 13th parliamentary elections. Early figures also suggest Jamaat-e-Islami is likely to emerge as the main opposition party, with around 43 seats.

Despite the favourable trends, the party leadership has urged restraint. BNP chairman Tarique Rahman requested supporters not to celebrate the victory immediately as a mark of respect following the death of his mother, Khaleda Zia, before the election. Instead, the party has asked workers and supporters to offer prayers for her after the Friday congregational prayer.

This is the first election in the country after it witnessed a major political crisis following the ouster of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
