Cases of norovirus, often called the “winter vomiting disease", have been climbing across the United States in recent weeks, according to a CBS News report citing data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The highly contagious virus causes gastroenteritis and spreads mainly through contact with the vomit or faeces of an infected person. Individuals can continue to shed the virus for up to two weeks even after symptoms improve.

Cases Rising in the US

CDC data shows that 14% of norovirus tests are now coming back positive, double the rate recorded three months ago (7%). With more than 2,700 tests conducted in the past week, an estimated 380 cases were confirmed in that period.

The US typically reports around 2,500 norovirus outbreaks every year, leading to over 100,000 hospitalisations and nearly 900 deaths. Adults aged 65 and older, young children, and people with weakened immune systems are most at risk of severe illness.

Wastewater data is also pointing to increased spread. According to WastewaterSCAN, a Stanford University-led monitoring initiative, norovirus levels in wastewater have surged 69% nationwide since October, with particularly sharp rises in Louisiana, Michigan and Indiana.

“We’re currently in the high category for norovirus at the national level," said Amanda Bidwell, the programme’s scientific manager, in an interview with NBC News.

Despite the rise, cases remain lower than last year’s spike. Bidwell noted that norovirus follows a consistent seasonal pattern but added, “I can’t say right now how big of a peak it will be."

How to Protect Yourself

Health experts recommend:

Washing hands thoroughly with soap and water for at least 20 secondsCleaning high-touch surfaces with bleach-based disinfectantsAvoiding close contact and staying home when sickNot preparing food for others while symptomaticPractising food safety, such as cooking shellfish fully and washing fruits and vegetablesStaying hydrated to prevent dehydration

Norovirus infections are common, but simple hygiene steps can significantly reduce the risk of catching or spreading the virus.
