Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese on Saturday married his long-time partner and finance Jodie Haydon at a private ceremony in Canberra. Albanese became the first Australian prime minister to tie the knot while in office.

The wedding was expected to be held this year as Albanese proposed to Haydon on Valentine’s Day last year. However, the date and other details of the ceremony were not disclosed.

As per a statement by the prime minister’s office, the couple married at a small ceremony in the presence of family and close friends at The Lodge in the capital city Canberra. Albanese shared a video from the ceremony on X.

“We are absolutely delighted to share our love and commitment to spending our future lives together, in front of our family and closest friends," Albanese said in the statement released to the media.

PM Modi Congratulates Albanese

Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated his Australian counterpart and wished the couple a happy married life.

“Congratulations to my good friend, PM Anthony Albanese and Ms. Jodie Haydon on their wedding. Wishing them a happy married life," he said on X.

In a separate joint statement, the couple said: “We are absolutely delighted to share our love and commitment to spending our future lives together, in front of our family and closest friends."

After the ceremony, where guests drank beer from a Sydney brewery, the couple walked down the aisle to Stevie Wonder’s “Signed, Sealed, Delivered (I’m Yours)." The newlyweds are to go on a five-day honeymoon in Australia from Monday.

The prime minister, who divorced his previous wife in 2019 and has an adult son, Nathan, met Haydon more than five years ago at a Melbourne business dinner.
