Apple has been known for supporting older devices for many years and the new update for iPhone 5s model launched 13 years back is another testament to its reliability for all the users.

The last update issued for the iPhone 5s was back in January 2023 and now three years later these users (anybody who is still using it) are getting the iOS 12.5.8 update which allows them to use their devices for a little longer with support for all the popular Apple features.

iPhone 5s Update: But Why, Apple?

The new iOS 12.5.8 update has rolled out along with the iOS 26.2.1 version but this one is only available for iPhone 5s and 6 users. The company’s release note for the surprising update mentions that the new version extends the certificate that is needed to continue using iMessage, FaceTime and also activate the device even after January 2027 which is when these devices would have become obsolete by all means.

We are not sure if other apps like Instagram and WhatsApp are getting regular updates on these iPhone models, but it is good to see Apple continue to support the devices launched 13 and 12 years back.

There is a strong reason for the company’s continued higher value in the market, especially when you have instances like these making people feel confident about using its devices for a long time and spending big money on them.

After all, the iPhone 5s was not exactly cheap when it had launched back in 2013 but those who did invest in the product are still being supported, even though Apple has talked about offering a minimum of 5 years security updates for an iPhone.

We have often said that Apple’s tight control over hardware and software allows the company to plan out for out-of-turn updates in case of a major security risk or expiring certificate to run its own apps.

And after all these years, Google and Samsung are trying to change the dynamics for Android users with their Pixel and Galaxy phones now providing up to 7 years update support. People still don’t understand the value of running on the latest versions, not just because of how it makes the brand look but also giving their devices the best security against major issues.
