India recently hosted a “Jaipur Foot" camp in Afghanistan to help amputees in the country. Under India’s “India for Humanity" program, the Bhagwan Mahaveer Viklang Sahayata Samiti (BMVSS) spearheaded an initiative in Kabul, Afghanistan, fitting over 70 prosthetic limbs for disabled individuals. This effort, aimed at restoring mobility and dignity to those affected by conflict, polio, and poverty, was carried out by Indian doctors over a week-long camp.

According to diplomatic sources, this initiative is part of India’s ongoing humanitarian efforts in Afghanistan.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) highlighted the significant impact of this project, noting the enthusiastic response from the local community. “As part of India’s ongoing humanitarian assistance to the people of Afghanistan, a five-day Jaipur Foot camp was organised in Kabul by BMVSS, Jaipur. The camp saw an enthusiastic response, with around 75 prosthetic limbs successfully fitted," MEA said in a statement.

The camp successfully fitted around 75 prosthetic limbs, providing much-needed assistance to the Afghan population, which has one of the world’s highest populations of amputees due to decades of conflict, landmines, and polio. Reports from the Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) indicate that there are over 147,000 registered patients across its rehabilitation centres in Afghanistan, with about 9,000 new cases each year.

The Taliban have also acknowledged India’s efforts. They mentioned that, with the help of Minister Dr Sahib Ahrar and other officials, Indian doctors provided artificial limbs to 100 disabled Afghan citizens in Kabul. However, they emphasised that many more individuals in Afghanistan still require prosthetics and suggested that the authorities should engage with India to extend this valuable program. This extension would ensure that more disabled Afghans, who currently lack proper artificial limbs, could benefit from this crucial support.
