Donald Trump likely to visit ‘Alligator Alcatraz’
Trump administration has set up a new migrants detention hub in Florida. The controversy around this camp is surging as it is located at a defunct airstrip in the west of Miami, and is surrounded by swampland teeming with alligators, crocodiles and pythons. As per a report by Reuters, President Donald Trump would likely attend the opening of this detention camp on Tuesday.
US President Donald Trump vowed to carry out the largest deportation program in the history, and the data shows spike in detention. As per the government records, the numbers in federal immigration detention have risen to 56,000 by June 15, from 39,000 when Trump took office. In need of more space, the US government set up a temporary migrant detention center in southern Florida dubbed “Alligator Alcatraz".
It’s called so because of the remote location, a vast subtropical wetland teeming with alligators, crocodiles and pythons. As per the Florida officials, these creatures act as natural barriers in this region and minimal security is required. This region in southern Florida spans over 11,000 square kilometres. It will be used by the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to house immigrants that have been detained before deportation.
As the camp is set up on an old airfield and in the outskirts, the temperatures here reach up to 40°C (104°F). Migrants will be held in tents under the open sky.
Environmental groups, immigration rights activists and a Native American tribe are protesting against the construction. They are accusing the Trump government of human rights violations and environmental destruction. As per the reports, two groups– Friends of the Everglades and the Center for Biological Diversity– filed a lawsuit in federal court in Miami seeking to halt the project. However, the White House has not given any statement in this regard.
As the opening of this detention camp is scheduled on July 1, it is likely that US President Trump and the secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem would visit the camp.
