Israelis living in the West Bank settlements have resorted to violence against Israel’s military and vandalised sites in the Israeli-held territory lately, according to a report.

This comes as the Israeli Defence Forces took measures to combat assaults on Palestinians.

On Sunday night, a protest outside a military base in the West Bank became violent, according to the Israeli military. Some Israeli civilians attacked security forces, even using pepper spray. They also damaged army vehicles and set fire to electronic equipment that the military said was used for maintaining security in the area, The Wall Street Journal reported.

Visuals from the spot showed protesters holding signs describing a local military commander a “traitor".

This comes after an earlier incident on Friday, when Israeli soldiers were enforcing a closed military zone near a Palestinian village that had recently been attacked. According to the military, they were suddenly surrounded by dozens of Israeli civilians who threw stones and physically attacked them, including the battalion commander. During the clash, a teenager from the group attacking the soldiers was injured.

Such incidents demonstrate the growing breakdown of law and order in the West Bank in recent years. Israelis linked to settlements have often attacked Palestinians, mostly without having to face any punishments. They have also at times clashed with Israeli security forces, WSJ reported.

On Sunday, the Israeli attackers spray-painted the word “revenge" at the military site— something they often leave behind as a message during attacks on Palestinians.

“Attacking the security forces, security facilities, and Israeli soldiers who are our brothers, our protectors, is a red line, and must be dealt with the utmost severity," Itamar Ben-Gvir, Israel’s far-right minister for national security, wrote on X.

The conflict between Israeli settlers and Palestinians has deep historical roots, centered around disputed land, national identity, and competing claims to territory. After the 1967 Six-Day War, Israel held the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, and since then, has supported the establishment of Jewish settlements in these areas—settlements considered illegal under international law by most of the world. Palestinians view them as a major obstacle to peace and a direct threat to the possibility of a future independent state. Tensions have often escalated into violence, especially as settlers expand into Palestinian territories, sometimes forcibly evicting residents.

In recent years, the United States has taken steps to address this issue. In 2024, for the first time, the US imposed sanctions on several Israeli settlers accused of violent attacks against Palestinians, signaling a tougher stance on settler violence.
