The Russian Foreign Ministry on Saturday said Russian President Vladimir Putin and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu held a telephone call to discuss the situation in West Asia.

“President of Russia Vladimir Putin and Prime Minister of Israel @netanyahu had a telephone conversation," the ministry said in a social media post.

“There was an exchange of views on the situation in the Middle East in light of the agreement on ceasefire and the exchange of detained persons," the ministry added.

The call comes two days after the United States Mission to the United Nations has formally urged the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) to back its draft resolution that integrates Trump’s 20-point plan and authorises new structures like the “Board of Peace" and an international stabilisation force.

A longer statement released by the ministry and accessed by state-run TASS said the two leaders held a “thorough exchange of views" on developments in the Gaza Strip, the implementation of the ceasefire agreement and the detainee exchange, the state of affairs surrounding Iran’s nuclear programme, and efforts to further stabilise the situation in Syria.

The leaders last spoke in October, when they discussed US President Donald Trump’s Gaza Peace Plan. The US President’s 20-point proposal calls for an immediate ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, a staged withdrawal of Israeli forces, the release of hostages, the creation of a transitional technocratic administration in Gaza overseen by an international “Board of Peace", the demilitarisation of the territory, and long-term reconstruction and economic development.

A summit in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, on October 13 saw Trump’s plan receive broad backing from several world leaders. Israel publicly approved the peace plan when Trump unveiled it on September 29, while Hamas has not fully accepted its terms.

The Times of Israel reported that Putin initiated Saturday’s phone call with Netanyahu. According to the Israeli Prime Minister’s Office, it was the latest in a series of recent conversations between the two leaders. The PMO said the calls focused on regional issues but did not provide further details.
