Powerful explosions rocked an industrial complex near Argentina’s capital of Buenos Aires on Friday night (local time), sparking a massive fire and injuring nearly 20 people. The blaze was so huge that several flights were delayed or diverted due to poor visibility.
Thick black smoke emerged from the area hundreds of meters into the night sky, glowing orange from the massive fire, as per videos on social media. The explosions took place near the country’s busiest international airport just outside Buenos Aires.
“The explosions and fire breaking out in the different factories are huge," AFP quoted Gaston Granados, mayor of Ezeiza, where the explosions took place. “We are trying to control (the fire) and extinguish it, but have not been able to so far," he told local media.
Granados said the windows of his own nearby house had been shattered and families were being evacuated from the area. A total of 22 people were admitted to a hospital, including patient with a heart attack and a pregnant woman suffering from respiratory issues.

What Caused The Massive Fire?
While the cause of the explosions remains unknown, they are likely to have originated from one of the five factories on fire, according to DW. One of the five factories was a chemical plant, whose warehouses caught fire, while another was a plastics plant, according to Granados.
Most of the injured were local residents who sustained minor to moderate burns and cuts from glass shattered by the shock wave, as per local reports. A dozen fire extinguishers and ambulances were deployed to the scene to bring the fire under control.
Firefighters were still battling to put out the fire early on Saturday, local media reported, after authorities earlier warned it would be challenging to bring the blaze under control. “It is a complex fire. It will be a long fire," said Fabian Garcia, the civil defence director for Buenos Aires province.
