US President Donald Trump took action on Friday by signing an executive order to eliminate tariffs on a wide range of commodities, including beef, coffee, and tropical fruits. This move comes in response to growing consumer complaints about high prices.

The decision follows a wave of Democratic victories in off-year elections earlier this month. Economic concerns were the top issue for voters in Virginia and New Jersey, signalling a shift in priorities that Trump couldn’t ignore. The elections served as a reminder of how inflation and rising prices have become a major headache for many Americans, the Associated Press reported.

In April, Trump imposed tariffs on a broad group of countries. He and his administration have maintained that these tariffs don’t affect consumer prices. However, the evidence shows otherwise. The high cost of beef, in particular, has become a focal point, and Trump had previously stated his intent to act on these soaring prices. Tariffs on Brazil, a key beef exporter, have been partly blamed for the surge, according to the Associated Press.

The new executive order removes tariffs on other items, such as tea, fruit juice, cocoa, spices, bananas, oranges, tomatoes, and some fertilisers. Many of these products are not produced domestically, adding weight to the argument that such tariffs only burden consumers.

Trump’s order came shortly after the US reached agreements with Ecuador, Guatemala, El Salvador, and Argentina. These agreements aim to reduce import taxes on agricultural products from these countries. Earlier this week, Trump hinted that lowering tariffs on coffee was also part of the plan, aiming to boost imports.

Trump’s campaign centred on promises of economic revival, with an emphasis on reducing inflation and bringing back manufacturing jobs. Yet, voters now face the reality of higher costs for groceries, electricity, and housing. Despite this, Trump remains defiant, insisting his policies have strengthened the economy.
