Several people were hit by a bus on Valhallavägen near the Royal Institute of Technology in central Stockholm on Friday afternoon, police said. The incident left both injured and deceased persons, though authorities have not released details on the number, gender or ages of the victims.
Police, emergency services and ambulances were working at the scene, and Valhallavägen was closed between Odengatan and Engelbrektsgatan due to the ongoing operation. Images in Swedish media showed a heavy presence of police vehicles and rescue teams as the area was cordoned off.
The incident is currently being investigated as grossly causing the death of another, though police said the cause of the crash remains unknown.
Police spokesperson Nadya Norton told AFP the cause of the accident was still unknown.
“The investigation will have to determine what happened. It’s too early to say and I don’t want to speculate," she said.
She said the bus driver had been arrested and a manslaughter investigation had been opened as a matter of routine.
“We need to question him, then we’ll see if he’s going to be released or detained," Norton said.
