The new passenger terminal at Hanimaadhoo Airport is set to be inaugurated today evening, marking a significant milestone in the northern region’s aviation infrastructure development.
According to the Maldivian government, Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu will be attending the inauguration of New Aviation Terminal.
Built with funding from an Indian line of credit, the Hanimaadhoo Airport expansion is worth about USD 136 million (roughly MVR 2 billion). It includes a 2.7-kilometre runway that can handle larger aircraft, a modern terminal capable of serving 1.3 million passengers annually, and new cargo, control tower, and fuel facilities.
The project is part of India’s USD 800 million Exim Bank line of credit to the Maldives and was initiated under former president Ibrahim Mohamed Solih as part of efforts to improve regional connectivity and economic growth in the northern atolls.
Once in full operation, the upgraded airport is expected to improve links between the Maldives and key international destinations, while giving a strong boost to tourism and trade in the northern region.
