The Bangladesh ist Party (BNP) on Friday announced it will formally seek the extradition of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina from India.
Senior BNP leader Salahuddin Ahmed told a press briefing in Dhaka that the party would “press for her extradition in accordance with the law."
“It is a matter between the Foreign Ministry of Bangladesh and the Foreign Ministry of India. We will urge the government of India to send her back to face trial," he said.
The announcement came a day after the BNP, led by Tarique Rahman—the son of former prime minister Khaleda Zia—secured a landslide victory in Thursday’s election. This was the first vote held since the 2024 student-led uprising that toppled Hasina.
Speaking to the media, Ahmed said the election result reflected the will of the people. “The burden of responsibilities has been increased thousand times. So we hope and pray to God that we will be able to fulfill the aspiration of the people and the sky-high expectation of this country," he said.
He added that Bangladesh now seeks friendly relations on the basis of sovereign equality with all nations, including neighbouring India.
Hasina, 78, who fled to India following the overthrow of her government, had been closely allied with New Delhi. She was sentenced to death in absentia last November for crimes against humanity.
Rahman, 60, is set to become Bangladesh’s next prime minister after the BNP alliance won 212 seats, according to the Election Commission, compared with 77 for the nearest rival, the Islamist-led Jamaat-e-Islami bloc.
Interim leader Muhammad Yunus, who has been heading Bangladesh since Hasina’s ouster in August 2024, said the election had “ended the nightmare and begun a new dream."
