US President Donald Trump has claimed that the latest public release of files linked to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein clears him of any wrongdoing, saying he was told the documents “absolve" him, according to The Telegraph.
Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One on Saturday, Trump said he had not personally reviewed the material. “I didn’t see it myself but I was told by some very important people that not only does it absolve me, it’s the opposite of what people were hoping, you know, the radical Left," Trump was quoted as saying by the UK-based newspaper.
Around three million pages of documents related to the Epstein case were released to the public on Friday. Trump is mentioned more than 1,000 times in the files, but the report said the release contains no major new allegations against him. Trump was known to have social ties with Epstein in the 1990s before the relationship reportedly ended.
Democrats, however, questioned the completeness of the disclosure and accused the Justice Department of withholding a significant portion of the records. Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer criticised Attorney General Pam Bondi and the Department of Justice, saying the numbers released did not add up.
“DOJ needs to get its story straight. They say they collected six million pages, but only admit to releasing three million," Schumer was quoted as saying by the newspaper. “But I checked, even that’s inflated. Less than 2.7 million pages were released. DOJ thinks it can just round up 300,000 pages and we won’t notice. We’re wondering what’s in those 300,000 pages and we’re still waiting to hear where the other three million pages are."
Epstein’s survivors also condemned the release. In a joint statement cited by the newspaper, they said: “This latest release of Jeffrey Epstein files is being sold as transparency but what it actually does is expose survivors."
“Once again, survivors are having their names and identifying information exposed, while the men who abused us remain hidden and protected," the statement said, adding that the Justice Department could not claim the process was complete until all legally required documents were released.
