At least 21 people died after a passenger boat capsized in the Nile River in north Sudan, officials said.
The boat, carrying about 30 passengers including women, children and elderly people, was travelling between the villages of Tayba al-Khawad and Deim al-Qarai on Wednesday morning.
According to AFP, the authorities said 21 bodies have been recovered so far.
Dr Mohamed Faisal Hassan, Sudan Doctors Network saying, “Rescue teams are continuing with their work since there could be more bodies."
The medical group had in a previous statement said six people had survived.
It urged authorities to “take immediate measures to ensure river transport safety and prevent the recurrence of such disasters that claim innocent lives".
“This painful humanitarian tragedy once again reveals the fragility of river transport and the absence of basic safety requirements," it added.
BBC quoted witnesses saying that the boat capsized due to high waves.
Dr Hassan was quoted by the media outlet that weak regulation of river transport may have contributed to the tragedy.
Sudan frequently reports similar accidents involving traditional boats, which are commonly used to cross the Nile because bridges are scarce, particularly in rural areas.
The medical group representative said that these boats are privately owned and authorities lacked proper regulatory systems and safety measures.
