At least 11 people were killed, and two others were injured after a train hit railway workers in southwest China on Thursday. The incident happened in Yunnan province of the country.
AFP quoted a statement by the Kunming Railway Bureau and reported that the train “used for seismic equipment testing" collided with construction workers at Kunming’s Luoyang Town station during the early hours today.
The train was “passing normally through a curve inside Kunming Luoyang Town Station when the collision with construction workers happened.
The workers had just entered the track area on a curved section.
Reuters termed the incident “the deadliest rail accident in more than a decade".
Meanwhile, the station in Yunnan province resumed normal services, and the cause of the accident was being investigated.
Those injured in the accident were admitted to a hospital.
China‘s rail network is the world’s largest, spanning more than 160,000 km (100,000 miles) and racking up billions of trips each year.
Though praised for its efficiency, it has drawn scrutiny after several high-profile incidents, such as a 2011 crash in the eastern province of Zhejiang that killed 40 and injured 200.
Nine were killed in 2021 when a train in the northwestern province of Gansu ran into workers on a section of the Lanzhou-Xinjiang railway.
