Amid Donald Trump’s push to acquire Greenland, a semi-autonomous territory of NATO ally Denmark, the United States’ renewed fixation on the island has taken an unusual turn. Shifting from diplomatic speculation to internet culture, the White House on Saturday shared a cryptic post, embracing a viral meme to amplify Trump’s long-standing interest in the Arctic territory.

Trump, who has repeatedly floated the idea of purchasing Greenland from Denmark, recently leaned into the online “Nihilist Penguin" trend — a meme that has circulated for nearly 20 years.

Originating from filmmaker Werner Herzog’s 2007 documentary ‘Encounters at the End of the World’, the meme is based on footage of an Adelie penguin breaking away from its group and heading alone into the Antarctic interior. Over time, the image came to symbolise isolation and absurd determination, earning nicknames such as “Lonely Penguin" and “Wandering Penguin."

Hopping on the meme trend, the White House shared an AI-generated image depicting Trump walking beside a penguin toward a frozen mountain range. In the image, the penguin carries a US flag, while the mountains are marked with Greenland’s flag and accompanied by the caption: “Embrace The Penguin."

The visual, however, departs from the original context of Herzog’s documentary, in which the penguin is not moving toward Greenland but instead moving deeper into Antarctica, away from both its colony and the ocean.

The meme follows a series of AI-generated images shared by Trump in recent days. One image showed Trump alongside Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio next to an American flag and a sign declaring Greenland a US territory, dated 2026. Another image, posted on Truth Social, depicted an expanded map of the United States that appeared to include Greenland, Canada, and Venezuela. That image seemed to be digitally altered from a photograph taken during Trump’s August 2025 meeting with European leaders, with the enlarged map added in the background.

Trump first raised the idea of acquiring Greenland shortly after taking office last year but has intensified his rhetoric in recent weeks. Over the weekend, he unsettled global markets by threatening a 10 per cent tariff on eight European countries, including Denmark. He later expanded on his vision during a speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos, before meeting NATO’s leadership and hinting at a new, as-yet-undefined agreement.

When asked on Thursday what the US would be willing to pay for the semi-autonomous Danish territory, Trump suggested no financial compensation would be required, saying, “We’re going to not have to pay anything other than the fact that we are building the Golden Dome." He added that any arrangement would grant Washington unrestricted access to Greenland, including military access, stating, “We’re getting everything we want at no cost."
